According to Wikipedia, a reinforced concrete bridge is a bridge constructed primarily from reinforced concrete, a composite material that combines the compressive strength of concrete with the tensile strength of embedded steel reinforcement. This combination enables the structure to effectively resist both compressive and tensile forces, making it suitable for a wide range of bridge applications. Reinforced concrete bridges are distinguished from plain concrete bridges, which rely solely on the compressive strength of concrete and do not contain steel reinforcement. Owing to their durability, cost-effectiveness, and structural versatility, reinforced concrete bridges became the predominant form of bridge construction throughout the twentieth century. The development of reinforced concrete bridge technology began in the late nineteenth century, with the construction of the first reinforced concrete bridge by Joseph Monier in Paris in 1875. Since then, advances in structural engineering, material science, and construction techniques have significantly improved the performance, safety, and longevity of reinforced concrete bridges, making them an essential component of modern transportation infrastructure.
